Lyndsey walking past the Chakri Maha Prasat Hall

Our first tourist excursion as new Bangkok residents was to visit the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha in the old section of the city. The complex is an exquisite example of Thai architecture, rich in history, and visually stunning. We could see the golden spikes from the tops of the buildings while peering out our quarantine window and where so excited to see it up close.

The first thing you notice is how ornate every surface is. The chapel of the Emerald Buddha specifically is completely covered with intricate patterns of mosaic tiles. The little chips of colored glass and gilding sparkled in the morning sunlight. Jonathan particularly enjoyed the narrative painting depicting the life of King Rama I that decorated the outer wall of the temple complex.
